Cornwall Council Candidates

Polling Day: Thursday, 1 May, 2025

ROB NOLAN - A long-standing campaigner for Truro

Rob is a long-standing councillor who has represented Boscawen and Redannick since 2007. He has also been mayor of Truro twice and sat on Truro City Council since 2006. Rob prides himself on representing the interests of local people, rather than council officials. He said: “While some Councillors represent the Council, I have always been clear that my role is to represent residents’ views.”

Rob has vast experience of delivering for local people, having served on the Council's Licensing Committee, Strategic Planning Committee and Neighbourhoods Scrutiny Committee, dealing with issues such as waste collection, fire and rescue, footpaths and beaches, food safety and nature recovery in Cornwall.

RUTH GRIPPER - A powerful voice for local people

Ruth was born and grew up in Perranwell and has been an active campaigner for the local community. She has a track record of public and community service through her career in the charity sector. She has worked for a large national health charity, a grassroots community charity, and as a consultant working with charities and funders to help improve what
they do.

Locally, Ruth has campaigned on improving our natuarl environment by reducing sewage discharge at Mylor Creek and supported a campaign to save the Stag Inn at Ponsanooth. She also supported the Lib Dem campaign to save the Women and Children's Hospital at Treliske after the Labour Health Secretary described the project as “unaffordable."

STEVEN WEBB - A highly effective campaigner for Truro.

Steven has been passionate about improving the community for many years. He has served as a city councillor since 2017. Steven believes that Truro needs a clear vision for the future: while everyone knows where the city has been, it's time to focus on where it's going.

Despite being paralysed from the neck down, Steven works tirelessly for the people of Truro, offering a unique perspective that sets him apart from many other candidates. He brings this perspective to all his work, serving as an advocate and voice for the residents, dedicated to making Truro a better place for everyone.

HOWARD FARMER - A hard-working local champion

Howard is a long-standing community organiser in the local area, who has worked as a school
governor and parish councillor. Howard says: “I want to give agency to the people of St Newlyn East, Cubert, Crantock, Goonhavern and St Allen by helping them understand how council matters influence their lives, explaining the choices available and advocating for them, rather than using the platform to express personal opinions.”

Locally, Howard has campaigned on making improvements to the Cubert Crossroads to make the junction less dangerous, and has supported Lib Dem calls to focus on more affordable housing in the local area, rather than allowing it to become a ‘developers’ charter.'

TONY MARTIN - Health and housing campaigner

Since leaving the Army, Tony has become an experienced chartered architect, working on the
delivery of major key-worker housing and social housing in the local area.

Housing shortage is a key issue that is so crucial here in Cornwall, with the abundance of second homes and holiday lets which should be reined in through planning regulation.

Tony’s wife is a senior NHS doctor - and teaches the next generation of doctors at Treliske - so he hears first hand the impact of the funding crisis on health, social care and our Hospital.
