Sea Front Traffic Calming - Local Residents to Have Their Say
Proposals to change the priority on Falmouth Sea Front will now be subject to consultation. This development follows a meeting with representatives from the local authority police and residents, called for and chaired by Julia Goldsworthy MP.
Falmouth County Councillors have pooled their highways budget to provide measures in Swanpool, along the sea front, to try to help tackle the problem of "boy racers" speeding in the area.
While the proposals to reduce the speed limit to 20 mph in Swanpool have been broadly welcomed, concerns have been raised by residents of Spernen Wyn that the change in priority along the sea front may move the problem onto other roads rather than remove it.
MP, Julia Goldsworthy, Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for Falmouth and Truro Terrye Teverson, local councillors, Oliver Cramp and Roger Bonney attended the meeting along with Inspector Scott and Peter Moore from Cornwall County Council Highways. Although the proposals fall below the threshold that requires consultation it was agreed that, given the number of concerns raised by local residents, a written consultation would take place before a final decision was made.
Commenting Ms Goldsworthy said,
"I am very pleased that these proposals will now be subject to a formal consultation process. Boy racers are a growing problem in Falmouth and while it is important that measures are taken with the intention of tackling this issue we must be sure that these measures do not leave local residents facing unintended consequences."
Terrye Teverson, the Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Candidate for Falmouth and Camborne added,
"I have spoken to many local residents who are understandably fed-up with boy racers turning the seafront into their own racing track. These proposals are a key step in tackling the problem and I look forward to hearing local people's views."
