Sarah Douglas-Martin selected to fight Truro City Council election
Truro resident and local community volunteer Sarah Douglas-Martin will be standing for election to Truro City Council at the upcoming by-election for Tregolls ward. Residents will be going to the polls on Thursday 19th January.
Sarah is a member of Trelander Community Centre Management Committee and previously volunteered at the youth club held there while she was secretary of the neighbouring Beechwood Parc Association. She was also treasurer for the Malpas Road Community Centre until it was transferred to Café Chaos. Sarah is now chair of Truro Community Land Trust. She is a passionate advocate for the importance of safe, decent housing and for supporting children and families affected by domestic violence and other trauma.
Sarah said:
"Having lived in Tregolls ward I was always delighted with the warmth of the friendly and welcoming nature of the community. This has inspiredme to get involved and give back, helping others with any problems and concerns to help sustain this wonderful area. I am very keen to promote the welfare of all sections in the community, reaching vulnerable people and groups such as people living with domestic violence and people with a disability."
Sarah has been disabled since 2009 and has been living with the effects of domestic violence for her entire adult life. As such, she knows the effects that being unsupported and isolated can have on personal wellbeing, physical health and the happiness of a family.
"I have seen and lived through the frustration that occurs when trying to navigate the seemingly never-ending rules and requirements to get basic help."
Sarah has been working and signposting people to available assistance and support networks, and hopes that as a councillor representing the people of Tregolls ward she will be able to help even more people.
