Public March Against Post Office Closures from Carnon Downs to Playing Place Post Office Saturday Midday

21 Mar 2008

Terrye Teverson, Liberal Democrat Parliamentary candidate for Truro and Falmouth, has planned a March from Carnon Downs Post office to Playing Place Post office on Saturday 29 March commencing 12.15pm.

Terrye said, "I feel very strongly about the planned closures of up to 40 post offices in Cornwall. Under successive Governments we have seen them shut leaving people isolated in their communities. Both Conservatives and Labour Governments have failed to recognised the service played by our post office network. The last Tory government closed thousands nationwide. Benefits payments and stamp sales have been reduced but no plans to allow the post offices more freedom to run entrepreneurial businesses have been put in place"

The villages of Playing Place and Carnon Downs and surrounding areas have been leafleted outlining the planned March on Saturday.

Terrye concluded, "Post Office Ltd are saying that they will make sure there is a post office within 3 miles of each other. But that's no good if you are elderly or disabled - you can't walk 3 miles to the nearest one. And with our local bus networks it would probably take all day to get there and back."

Terrye has been talking to senior County Councillors about a potential merged role with local council one stop shops working alongside the post office.
