PADDY AND MATTHEW BACK TERRYE AT CANDIDATE ADOPTION MEETING

21 Mar 2010

Terrye Teverson's campaign to become the first Member of Parliament for the new Truro and Falmouth constituency at the General Election was boosted last night at a packed Adoption meeting in Tregolls School Hall in Truro.

Terrye spoke to her supporters saying, "This election will be important for Cornwall. Under the Tories many jobs here will be threatened. Cameron and Osborne talk of swingeing cuts to the public sector. In Truro and Falmouth 4 out of every 10 jobs is in the public sector: nurses, teachers, police officers, probation officers, home carers and librarians. Cutting these jobs while the private sector is in a fragile state could cause a double dip recession and take money out of our local businesses and shops. The Tories want to help the wealthy people by inheritance tax cuts for the wealthy paid for by throwing ordinary workers on the dole."

Former Liberal Democrat leader, Paddy Ashdown, and retiring MP for Truro Matthew Taylor spoke on behalf of Mrs Teverson. Annette Egerton, widow of David Penhaligon sent a message of support to Terrye and said how important it is to have a strong voice to speak up for Cornwall in Parliament.

She wrote, "You could not have a harder working candidate than Terrye - I am confident that Terrye will be the next Member of Parliament for Truro and Falmouth. David was Liberal through and through and liked nothing better than to beat the Tories. So go get them Terrye!"

Matthew Taylor MP commented, "Terrye is someone who wants to become an MP to work hard for the people of Cornwall - I have campaigned alongside Terrye on some of the most important issues that face people living here.

"No-one should doubt her total commitment to Cornwall. Terrye is a successful local businesswoman, and understands only too well the problems many people are facing in today's economic climate. This area has been Liberal since the days of David Penhaligon - Terrye is the best person to keep his work alive and keep fighting on the issues which really matter like affordable housing, fair wages for local people, education and the health service."

Paddy Ashdown, who lead the Liberal Democrats in the 90's, came to Truro to support Mrs Teverson's adoption as the party's candidate for the new parliamentary seat in the coming general election.

Speaking to the crowded hall, Mr Ashdown said: "You couldn't vote for a harder working person to be your next MP. Terrye has been unflinching in her work for this area over the years. She first brought the homeless charity Shelter to Cornwall and showed them the awful housing situation here back in the late 80's - prompting the charity to set up in the county."

"Terrye has run a dairy farm, raised a family, built her own home, started and built a hugely successful business - she has a wealth of experience that is hard to match in any of the other career politicians standing in this constituency."

Matthew concluded, "This seat is currently held by the Liberal Democrats in Truro and Falmouth. The Truro part of the constituency has been held for 35 years, firstly by David Penhaligon and then myself. I will be working alongside Terrye to ensure it stays gold."
