Cornwall Liberal Democrats have welcomed pre-emptive action from Cornwall Council who have stepped in to keep vital transport links open through grant funding to essential ferry operators in Cornwall.

Whilst most people remain in lockdown and remaining close to home, Cornwall's emergency workers and other key workers need to be able to move around Cornwall quickly and efficiently to carry out their essential work.

The Council is providing grant funding to three essential ferry services whose normal service has dropped to the point where their viability has been threatened.

The King Harry Ferry, which provides a vital link to Roseland, Bodinnick Ferry which crosses the river Fowey between Bodinnick and Fowey and Polruan Ferry which also crosses the river Fowey between Fowey and Polruan will all receive grant funding to keep their essential transport links operating.

Geoff Brown, Lib Dem cabinet portfolio holder for transport said: "I am pleased to say that Cornwall Council have been able to step in to keep these essential transport links operating. These ferry operators provide an essential service all year round, but during the Coronavirus they are especially import as they allow emergency services and other key workers to respond to situations rapidly and keep people safe."

Edwina Hannaford, Lib Dem Cornwall Councillor for Looe West added: "I lobbied Cornwall Council for assistance to keep these viral transport connections open after listening to the concerns of the Lanteglos Parish Council and residents of Polruan and Bodinnick. I would like to thank the portfolio holder Cllr Geoff Brown for hearing the communities plea for help and for acting swiftly to keep these essential lifelines running."
