Liberal Democrat Robert Nolan was elected to Truro City Council on 27 July in a dramatic by-election victory over the Conservatives. Robert snatched the seat from the Tories in a hard fought campaign that saw Labour slump to fourth place behind Mebyon Kernow.

Despite calling the election, after the sad death of Conservative councillor, John Penhaligon, the Tories put up a lacklustre campaign and their candidate Thomas Hill failed to stay for the Count.

Robert Nolan said, "I would like to thank the electorate who have put their faith in me. My election messages of a cleaner, safer, greener Truro clearly struck a chord with people. Truro is a great place in which to live and work, but it needs to be safer in the evenings and at weekends. We need to give the City back its lungs by tackling choking traffic jams that are polluting our environment; and we need to put recycling at the top of our agenda."

Matthew Taylor, M.P., said, "I am delighted for Robert. He is an extremely hard-working individual who is brimming with ideas for the city. He will make a fantastic city councillor and I wish him every success."

Result in full:

Rober Nolan (Liberal Democrat) 521 (48.9%)

Conservative 309 (29.0%)

Mebyn Kernow 137 (12.9%)

Labour 99 (9.2%)
