TEVERSON PRESENTS 'PRECIOUS LIVES' CHEQUE

December 15, 2008 2:25 PM

More than 300 people packed the annual Salvation Army Christmas Concert held in the Princess Pavilions this weekend, raising more than £500 for the Precious Lives Appeal.

Children's Hospice South West has been providing care and respite to families across the region for more than 13 years. Originally started in North Devon, and more recently in North Somerset, the Precious Lives Appeal is now hoping to raise £3.3 million to fund a world class centre in Cornwall.

Terrye Teverson, Liberal Democrat PPC for Truro and Falmouth, was asked to give a speech and present the cheque for £550 to Mary Murfin, the Precious Lives Community Fundraiser.

A hospice in Cornwall will offer more choice to families across the South West on which hospice they choose to use. It also offers a place closer to home for many families in Cornwall and Plymouth, who find the journey to Devon or Somerset too far.

"The Salvation Army are well-known for their work in supporting disadvantaged people," Mrs Teverson said to the packed audience.

"The money raised today for the Precious Lives Appeal will go some way to meet the financial needs of this incredibly important facility in Cornwall. Almost £1.7 million has already been raised thanks to the amazing generosity of the people of Cornwall - who have yet again shown their willingness to support local projects."

Mrs Teverson thanked the Salvation Army Captain Chris Baldwin and Major Cliff Bradbury for the work they do in the community.

"As politicians we must remember the many people who are homeless on our streets tonight. Often the cause is mental health issues and the breakdown of relationships. Homelessness could happen to anyone of us - we should remember those who are less fortunate this Christmas."
