Baby chat held at Malabar Community and Children's Centre

November 4, 2008 11:00 AM

Terrye Teverson was shown Malabar Community and Children's Centre this week by Lisa Sherlock, Truro Children's Centres Development Manager. Terrye met with Fraser McAlpine a volunteer centre Manager who said, "My wife was going along to the first meeting but couldn't make it so I went instead. I could see that the committee needed more help and so decided to get involved. It wasn't something I thought I would do. I am really glad I did. I wanted something to happen so my own children could get involved."

Lisa Sherlock outlined her work in the community to provide a seamless service for children from 9 months to 5 years and their families. Early education helps identify any special educational needs for children.

Baby chat led by Katie Pinnock allows mothers and babies to come and get advice on a whole range of subjects from childhood illnesses to weaning. Terrye Teverson said, "This is such a vital lifeline to lots of mums. It's quite a lonely time and can be quite scary being in charge of a baby. Places like Baby chat provide a reassuring hand and of course some company to meet other mums. Parenting skills are not something we ever get training in but most of us need some real help sometimes."

Terrye was also taken to see the Malpas Road and Trelander Community Children's centres.

She concluded, "Putting money into first rate services for our youngsters will pay dividends in the future. The first five years of a child's live are the most important for setting their future development. I am delighted to hear that Truro and other areas are putting babies first."
