Penryn Bowling Club Bowled Over by Sewage Stink

October 2, 2007 11:38 AM
Terrye and the Penryn Bowling Club hold their noses as the stink from SWW's sewage works is overpowering

What a stink! Penryn Bowlers and Terrye try to avoid the smell.

Penryn Bowling Club members are fed up with the awful smells coming from the South West Water sewage works near their club. The stink is affecting their games and their social calendar.

Bar steward at the bowling club Suzie Collings explained the problem to Terrye Teverson, Liberal Democrat Parliamentary spokesperson, when she visited this Sunday afternoon.

Suzie said, "We just cannot use our balcony. It stinks. We have tried contacting South West Water and they just say they will put some detergent down to try and stop the smell. It is not working."

Terrye commented, "It is outrageous that while local people are paying some of the highest water charges in the country, 400 members of the Penryn Bowling Club are putting up with these appalling sewage smells in their clubhouse. The sewage works are just below the verandah of the club and means that members cannot sit outside and have to shut all the windows. Not very pleasant when you are having a BBQ as they are today."

Club Secretary Derek Blight pointed out "we have tried dozens of times to get it sorted. The Environment Agency is behind us but say they are powerless to take them to court. We just want our members to be able to enjoy a decent social club."

Terrye said, "The smell gets so bad they are unable to use the bowling green itself. I can smell the sewage today but it must be horrendous in the summer."

Terrye will be taking action on Penryn Bowling Club's behalf and will be contacting Christopher Laughlin Chief Executive of South West Water to demand a solution to the problem.
